Grant Professionals Association

National Conference Session

Presenter: Kristin Raack, CFRE, GPC

Capital campaigns have long been a key fundraising strategy for organizational growth. Historically, campaigns were most common for large cultural and education institutions and generally used for “bricks and mortar.” Now, organizations of all size are leveraging the best practices associated with capital campaigns more frequently in the form of “mini-campaigns,” capacity campaigns, and comprehensive campaigns.

Yet, all too often, grant professionals play only a small supporting role in a nonprofit’s campaign efforts. These grant professionals, however, are well-positioned to leverage their existing skills in research, strategy, writing, and project management to play an integral leadership role in campaigns of all sizes and types.

During this session, attendees will:

· Learn the basic steps of a campaign

· Become familiar with the differences between various campaign types such as mini, capacity, capital, and comprehensive

· Understand how grant professionals can leverage their existing skills to make themselves valuable during a campaign

· Explore related professional growth opportunities

· Obtain a toolkit of campaign resources and best practices

The content presented in this session will align with several GPC competencies:

  • Knowledge of strategies for effective program and project design and development

  • Knowledge of how to research, identify and match funding resources to meet specific needs

  • Knowledge of organizational development as it pertains to grant seeking

  • Knowledge of methods and strategies that cultivate and maintain relationships between fund-seeking and recipient organizations and funders

Attendees will increase their general knowledge and value at their current organization, while also diversifying their skills for future professional opportunities. This session will provide a strong foundation in campaign best practices.
