OUR RESULTS
Augmenting Development Staff to Raise Millions
The Client
AMITA (formerly Presence Health) is a health care system focused on serving the poor and vulnerable with more than 250 sites of care in the Chicago area. (Chicago, Ilinois)
The Impact
For six years, AltruNext served as a core grant writer for Presence Health, submitting more than 100 letters of inquiry (LOIs) and proposals. AltruNext raised millions of dollars for the health system including:
-
Circuit Court of Cook County, Mental Health Court Clinical Case Management Services: $1,970,295
-
Illinois Department of Human Services, SOR Hospital Screening and Warm Handoff: $514,000
-
Dunham Fund: $400,000
-
Westlake Health Foundation: multiple awards, $100,000- $300,000
-
Healthy Communities Foundation: $100,000
-
Cigna: $92,000
-
Ackermann Foundation: multiple awards, $45,000- $77,000
-
Susan G. Komen: multiple awards, $50,000- $76,463
-
The Retirement Research Foundation: $59,896
The Challenge
The grant office staff found it difficult to manage the ebbs and flows of grant work. The workflow did not yet necessitate hiring additional staff but the team needed external support for busy seasons. The health system recognized that outsourcing its grant writing to an outside firm would not only expand the capacity of its own staff but increase their likelihood for success.
The Collaboration Process
-
While the AltruNext team took on most of the grant deliverables, the AMITA staff was able to focus on relationship development with foundations and corporate giving offices.
-
AltruNext conducted extensive research to identify new prospects, qualify opportunities, and work with program staff to obtain necessary information.
-
We also provided project management support on complex projects.

While AltruNext made the case for grant funding, AMITA staff had the time to develop strong relationships with funders. The additional funds raised supported AMITA’s work as the largest provider of behavioral health services in the state, creating a safety net for those who experience significant and persistent mental health challenges and otherwise are at increased likelihood to become homeless or incarcerated. Instead, they receive the care they need through AMITA and can continue to contribute to our communities and economy.
