Expanding Impact and Increasing Relevance through Intentional Strategic Planning

The Client

Humility Homes and Services, Inc, is committed to ending homelessness by offering housing opportunities and supportive services in the greater Quad Cities area. The organization owns and leases over 100 scattered site homes, maintains a 70-person emergency shelter, and operates a 10,000 square foot resale enterprise called Fresh Start Center. (Davenport, Iowa)

The Impact

Grounded in its mission to end homelessness and the vision of a home for every person, Humility’s strategic plan elevates the organization to meet the current challenges brought on by the pandemic and its economic repercussions. The screening tool helps Humility staff quickly assess new opportunities and determine which are worth exploring with the Board. Both Board and staff have rallied around a shared vision for the organization’s direction. Humility can now prioritize specific programming initiatives to adjust to the scope and service model shifts experienced as a result of COVID-19 and provide necessary organizational enhancements to ensure that people, resources, and systems are in place to fully implement the plan.

The Challenge

Humility Homes and Services, Inc. grew out of a recent merger between two related organizations that have been serving the homeless community for 30 years. As part of that process, Humility wanted to create a united vision for its future. To do this, they needed help gathering community and stakeholder input and facilitating internal discussions to arrive at a solid strategic plan that would guide their resources towards their ultimate goal: ending homelessness in the Greater Quad Cities area.

The Collaboration Process
  • First, ​AltruNext assessed the health of Humility’s organization through an audit process which identified potential areas for improvement.

  • Next, we partnered with Humility’s staff and Board leaders to gather stakeholder input through customized surveys, interviews, and focus groups. 

  • Then, we prepared a summary report of findings; including identification of common themes, analysis of elements, and additional resources to further explore theme areas.

  • Then, in collaboration with the Executive Leadership team and staff, we designed a strategic screening tool to guide decisions about future programming initiatives and facilitated a Board Retreat to confirm specific strategic objectives.

  • Finally, in partnership with AltruNext, Humility drafted a simple Strategic Plan that articulates the future direction of Humility through four strategic initiatives and defines metrics to measure progress. The organization established a quarterly routine to monitor progress and ensure implementation of strategic goals.
